Roundtable Discussion: “Mexico’s Growing Economy and the Impact of Recent Reforms on Trade and Investment”

On Thursday, June 18th, 2015 we had a Roundtable Discussion, at the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia, with the Honorable Salvador Behar, Legal Counsel for International Trade of the Ministry of the Economy of Mexico in Washington, D.C., hosted by Carlos I. Giralt-Cabrales, Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia. Behar discussed Mexico’s growing economy, the impact of recent reforms on trade and investment, and opportunities for companies in the Greater Philadelphia region to do business in Mexico.

Some highlights covered in the discussion included:

• 6 million jobs in the US depend on trade with Mexico, 246,000 of those are in Pennsylvania.
• Canada, the US and Mexico are working to make the NAFTA region the most competitive region in the world.
• Mexico’s historic structural reforms are opening enormous investment opportunities across key sectors such as energy and telecommunications, among many others.
• The Transpacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), (in which Mexico and the United States are key negotiators) will boost the competitiveness of our region and will create great trade and investment opportunities among the twelve (12) Asia-Pacific participating countries that will drive world economic growth in the future.

Mexico is the region’s second largest export market in the Greater Philadelphia Region, after Canada, representing nearly 10% of overall exports.
