Philadelphia International Medicine and the Sociedad Mexicana de Cardiologia Announce Collaboration Organizations enhancing the continuum of care together with advanced training opportunities PHILADELPHIA, Pa., USA - Philadelphia International Medicine (PIM) and the Sociedad Mexicana de Cardiologia (SMC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance knowledge sharing among physicians in Philadelphia and Mexico that can enhance the health of their communities through advanced physician continuing education.
PIM and SMC agreed to create a knowledge bridge by linking cardiologists who are members of SMC to PIM and its network, which includes Temple University Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center. This collaboration will provide SMC physicians with medical education, medical training, innovative uses of medical technology, and coordinated comprehensive patient care. Under the terms of this agreement, Sociedad Mexicana de Cardiologia and Philadelphia International Medicine will focus on sharing medical knowledge and technology while also working to improve accessibility to highly skilled, continuing medical education and physician training while improving each party’s medical capabilities, research and patient care. “It is an honor for the Mexican Society of Cardiology to collaborate with Philadelphia International Medicine. This new participation aims to bring both institutions closer together so that physicians from both organizations can receive a bi-directional benefit. This close relationship to the hospitals of Philadelphia International Medicine is intended to support the community and the teaching of medicine in our health system with cutting-edge technology and practices. No doubt the benefit will be mutual, taking the best of both worlds into one,” said Dr. Erick Alexanderson, Sociedad Mexicana de Cardiologia President. The MOU specifically covers four areas of on-going continuing education including live, video conference seminars through PIM’s Global Education Media (GEM) program, physician medical education through the Physician Partnership Program (PPP), physician and consultant visits through conferences, patient referrals and second opinions. “We look forward to this collaborative, continuous relationship with Sociedad Mexicana de Cardiologia. This opportunity allows PIM hospitals to engage and establish relationships with Mexico’s health care community expanding on their teaching mission. SMC physicians and PIM physicians sharing innovations and best practices will enhance both organizations in regards to medical education and the continuation of care for both communities,” said Leonard Karp, President and CEO of Philadelphia International Medicine. Integration of the PIM and SMC relationship will begin by implementing the GEM program, connecting SMC physicians to PIM’s networked hospitals through interactive video seminars. In addition, the SMC cardiologists are scheduled to visit and observe the hospitals in the Philadelphia, where they will be paired with a mentor in early fall through the PPP program. Through the PPP program, SMC physicians will engage in a one-week intensive peer-to-peer clinical development program while forming relationships with physicians and the community in Philadelphia. The agreement also encourages PIM cardiologists to participate in the National Conference of Cardiology that will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, hosted by SMC this November. Leonard Karp Awarded the 2017 USCIPP International Services Leadership Award Recognized for outstanding contributions to international healthcare PHILADELPHIA, Pa., USA - Leonard Karp, president and CEO of Philadelphia International Medicine (PIM) was awarded the 2017 US Cooperative for International Patient Programs (USCIPP) International Services Leadership Award at the USCIPP annual meeting in New York.
USCIPP hosted its first Leadership Awards Dinner during its annual meeting honoring Karp’s accomplishments. Paul Farmer, MD, Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was also honored with the 2017 USCIPP International Humanitarian and Global Health Leadership Award. USCIPP’s Leadership Award is presented to individuals for their contributions to international healthcare. USCIPP celebrated Karp’s outstanding leadership and lifetime commitment to improving international patient services and dedication to the USCIPP organization. Karp assisted in the formation of PIM and has over 25 years of experience within the healthcare community. At PIM, he leads an organization whose goal is to establish the Philadelphia region as an international healthcare destination of choice. PIM is the joint international office of the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Temple University Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and works with the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Renfrew Center, Rothman Institute, Vincera Institute and Wills Eye Hospital. In accepting the award, Karp called on USCIPP to do more to help train the next generation of leaders. “As I see it, while leadership may be an intrinsic trait, and can be measured and identified, without nurturing and mentorship it may remain a raw resource. As international medicine faces new challenges, how do we help develop the leadership to enable us all to thrive. How do we establish career ladders so that we can retain our best and brightest. And how do we become a profession, with knowledge sharing and collaboration between friends, even friends who do compete. That’s why I would encourage USCIPP to explore the establishment of a USCIPP Academy. The Academy would be a safe place where future leaders in this field could go for a one or two-week, intensive program to learn best practices, delve into global trends, identify solutions to emerging issues, and form life-long friendships.” Karp is a founding member of USCIPP and has severed in a number of capacities including being a member on the USCIPP’s Advisory Council. Karp has also advocated for the expansion of the international healthcare field by serving as a members of the US Commerce Department’s Healthcare Team Export Council and as an international trade advisor for the US Trade Representative and Department of Commerce. Israel’s Amazing World Rankings By Sherwin Pomerantz President, Atid EDI Ltd. and Authorized Trade Representative (ATR) for Pennsylvania for the Eastern Mediterranean Originally posted online at atid-edi.com It is nothing short of amazing that a small, young country with just over 8 million people in existence for only 69 years can rank so high on so many international comparative indices. Talk about punching above one’s weight, Israel is a prime example. For example, the World Economic Forum’s 2016-2017 Global Competitiveness Report ranked Israel as the 2nd best place for innovation in the world after Switzerland. A recent ranking of universities worldwide by MIT, found that Israel’s Technion-Israel Institute of Technology is #1 in the world among universities that support innovation. Last week, the New York-based data firm CB Insights, issued a report that shows that Israel has the second highest concentration of cyber-defense companies in the world after the United States. Cyber-defense companies in the report covered a range of subsectors including quantum, encryption, deception security, automobile security, Internet of Things security, cyber insurance, mobile security, autonomous systems, critical infrastructure security and predictive intelligence. The CB report identified the top 30 companies worldwide which included three Israeli firms, Argus (automobile security), Illusive Networks (cyber protection using deception technology) and Indegy (protection of critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks). Between them they have raised $78 million from investors, including Microsoft Ventures and Bessemer Ventures. Israel also holds a worldwide leadership position in the digital health sector. The sector in Israel grew significantly in 2016, both in terms of funding and the number of companies, with investments jumping almost 30% to $183 million in 2016 over 2015, according to a report released by the nonprofit organization Start-Up Nation Central. Personal health tools and health analytics accounted for over 70% of deal volume in 2015 and 2016 within the overall digital health sector. The health analytics subsector, focused on companies that collect and analyze data to solve medical problems for businesses and consumers, received the most funding in the past two years: $84 million in 2015, 59% of total investments, and $58 million in 2016, 32% of total investments. Considerable funding in 2016 also reached the clinical workflow subsector, which includes companies that enable hospitals, clinics, labs, and other healthcare stakeholders to work more efficiently. This sector received investments of $55 million, or 30% of total investments. The wearables & sensors subsector also received $46 million, or 25% of total investments, in 2016. The report went on to state: “Israel’s unique capabilities in information, communication, mobile, and cyber technologies, together with more than 25 years of expertise in implementing health IT, electronic medical records, and business analytics, offers Israel the opportunity to become a truly influential player in the global digital health arena.” Indeed, Israel has made great strides as a small, young country, not to mention the fact that it operates in one of the most politically volatile regions in the world with a host of nearby countries sworn to its destruction. Israel’s accomplishments to date prove that size, age, location and other classification criteria do not determine a country’s level of success or advancement. They also highlight the fact that Israel has developed innovative and entrepreneurial strengths with the capability of greatly impacting the global economy. For those companies who have not yet realized the business opportunities present in Israel, the time is now and our firm, Atid EDI Ltd., with 25 years of business development experience in the country, is uniquely positioned to assist. Sherwin Pomerantz is president of Atid-EDI Ltd., an economic development consulting firm with 24 years’ experience in assisting overseas companies and public entities in their export promotion and foreign direct investment attraction efforts.
“Now’s the time to go to Cuba!” Richard Roffman, Publisher, Cuba Trade Magazine told attendees at our Cuba Trade Seminar. According to Roffman, Cuba is bustling with new energy and welcome not only tourists, but also new US business opportunities.
On April 10th, the WTCGP partnered with the City of Philadelphia Commerce Department to present a seminar focusing on trade possibilities with Cuba. Over 40 attendees packed the Innovation Lab at the Municipal Services Building to get first-hand information on what’s currently happening in Cuba since President Obama lifted sanctions.
