BASSETT'S ICE CREAM PRESS RELEASE
Bassett’s Ice Cream Company, a fifth-generation family business since 1861, has successfully opened its first store in Seoul, South Korea and is now looking for opening 30 additional stores within this year. Bassett’s Ice Cream, located in Philadelphia, is a full-service frozen dessert distributor, offering over 100 flavors.
OIBD’s Korea Office has been working together with Bassetts’ Ice Cream-Korea Office since 2016 to meet with the local rules and regulations in Korea, including its manufacturing facility registration at the Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. On June 7th, the delegation from Pennsylvania DCED, City of Philadelphia, Team Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Orchestra attended the grand opening of the first store of Bassett Ice Cream.
Bassett’s Ice Cream Korea targets for opening additional 15 stores nationwide by the end of August to fulfill the demands of Korean consumers’ premium ice cream, which will certainly increase the shipments from Philadelphia, PA to South Korea. Read More

Why Tianjin, China?
Philadelphia and Tianjin share a long-standing tradition of business and cultural exchange dating back to the Sister City Agreement signed between Philadelphia and Tianjin in 1979. In June 2016, a delegation from Tianjin visited with WTCGP China Club members to explore opportunities for cooperation to expand trade and investment between Tianjin and the Binhai New Area and Greater Philadelphia. With the growing need for advanced medical care in China and the interest of Chinese students to attend U.S. colleges and universities, promising sectors identified included health (including medical tourism) and higher education, both strengths of the Greater Philadelphia Region. In addition, Tianjin delegation officials agreed to assist WTCGP member companies in accessing and facilitating business connections and opportunities in Tianjin. Vice Chairman of WTC Tianjin, Zhang Tiejun concluded the meeting by extending a personal invitation to the City and Greater Philadelphia Region to visit Tianjin and the Binhai New Area. This included the possibility of a 2017 trade mission to Sister City, Tianjin, organized by the City of Philadelphia.

What does the MOU represent for WTCGP members and clients?
The World Trade Center, Tianjin (WTCT) will serve as a gateway to the Tianjin and China marketplace for WTCGP members and client companies by connecting its member companies with WTCGP clients and members. Particular focus for business to business collaboration will be in the fields of: healthcare, higher education, legal services, food industry, aviation, petrochemicals, automobiles, metalworking and medical device sector.
What does the business landscape look like in Tianjin?
Located in the Northern Coast of China, Tianjin is the fourth largest municipality with a total population of more than 15 million people. Tianjin is a hub city for international shipping and logistics, manufacturing and research and development. Created in 2009, Tianjin Binhai New Area was designated by the Chinese government as a special Free Trade Zone. Binhai has an international seaport, and an international airport and is a 33-minute high-speed train ride from Beijing. There are 141 Global 500 companies with operations in the Binhai New Area.
As Partner and Chair of China Business Group and International Group for White and Williams, LLP, how do you view the potential for Greater Philadelphia businesses in the Chinese market?
Over the past fifteen years, I have traveled to China on a regular basis, and have visited Tianjin on many occasions dating back to 2002. The economic development in Tianjin is extraordinary. Through the assistance of CDI and our Sister City program, White and Williams maintains a strong strategic alliance with Tianjin-based Winners Law Firm, now dating back seven years. This is the type of cooperation we envision between member companies of the WTCGP and Tianjin WTC. We had very productive conversations with the leadership of the Tianjin WTC during our June 1st meetings and we are working on several pilot business opportunities between our respective members. With the strong Sister City relationship between Philadelphia and Tianjin, it is quite fitting that the WTCGP is moving forward in strengthening the business relationship with Tianjin WTC. We are optimistic that this will lead to further commercial opportunities for the Greater Philadelphia region.

Mitsubishi Electric is a global company with approximately $40 Billion in revenue and 130,000 employees. Greater Philadelphia Selected to Develop New Market Prioritization
and Metropolitan Economic Partnership Strategies
as Part of the Global Cities Initiative
Participation seeks to deepen the impact of metropolitan trade strategies that will help Philadelphia determine how to best strengthen global economic engagement with international counterparts
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Today, it was announced that Greater Philadelphia has been selected to join a group of eight city-regions seeking to amplify the impact of trade strategies through new research and problem-solving that will determine how city-regions can best prioritize and execute economic partnerships with international metro counterparts. This new effort builds upon Philadelphia’s prior participation in the Global Cities Initiative (GCI), a joint project of Brookings and JPMorgan Chase, which included developing a regional export strategy.
“Even with strong trade and investment strategies, all metros face resource and capacity constraints to engaging internationally. In the global market haystack, metros need tools to focus on where they are most likely to find the needles,” said Marek Gootman, Brookings fellow and director of strategic partnerships and global initiatives. “We selected this diverse group of metros to test new approaches to identify, prioritize, and structure economic connections with specific foreign counterparts for maximum returns.”
Selected by Brookings through a competitive application process, Greater Philadelphia will join Atlanta, Columbus, Louisville/Lexington, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, and Wichita in producing a locally-tailored market prioritization assessment, and initiating or expanding at least one metro-to-metro collaboration. These activities will yield an approach that can be replicated by other metropolitan areas.
“It is an honor for Philadelphia to be selected for this new phase of the Global Cities Initiative,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “The economy becomes increasingly global with each day that passes, and in order to remain competitive, our city and region must identify ways in which we can more strategically focus our efforts internationally. Philadelphia’s participation in the Global Cities Initiative will allow the region to examine our existing economic strengths and opportunities for growth, while simultaneously identifying key markets around the globe where we can create or expand partnerships.”
The GCI metros will test a new evidence-based methodology to prioritize international markets for high-potential economic relationships. Through an assessment, each metro area will identify existing and potential market connections, sector synergies, and growth trends. Additionally, the cohort will examine different models to operationalize international metro–level economic partnerships targeted through prioritization, exploring bilateral and multi-lateral sector, geographic, and intermediary relationships.
“The World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia is pleased to join Greater Philadelphia's regional leaders in this important GCI learning cohort that will take our metro export plan to the next level, identifying best markets and global partners, and tapping into the extensive network of world trade centers worldwide,” added Linda Conlin, President, World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia.
Since its launch, the Global Cities Initiative (GCI) has raised awareness about the importance of international economic connections and competitiveness for growth and job creation, and spurred dozens of metropolitan areas to reorient their economic strategies toward engaging world markets. GCI has become a hub for coalitions of metro leaders across public, private, and civic sectors to connect with their counterparts for peer learning, problem-solving, and economic collaboration.
“Greater Philadelphia is a truly global region, and we’re delighted it’s getting this critical support to further develop international growth strategies,” said Mark Schrieber, Managing Director and Region Manager, JPMorgan Chase. “We must look beyond our metro area for growth opportunities; this effort will create international economic connections for local businesses and greater economic opportunity for all residents.”
The regional project team includes the City of Philadelphia, Select Greater Philadelphia Council, World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia, and Temple University’s Fox School of Business.
Participation in the Global Cities Initiative will allow Greater Philadelphia to build on other ongoing efforts with an international focus. In 2016, the region worked with the Brookings Institution to release its three-year metro export plan, which identified several goals to create a more dynamic export economy. Just last month, City officials convened a group of local business and economic development leaders to begin building out a plan for more effective, cohesive marketing of the region for business and talent attraction.

In early June, the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia, represented by board chairman Gary Biehn, signed into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with WTC Tianjin. The MOU will create a framework of cooperation which will seek to expand trade and investment in targeted sectors of opportunity, including healthcare, higher education, legal services, aviation, petrochemicals, metalworking, and the medical device sector.
As reported by the Philadelphia Business Journal:
Biehn said the agreement is the culmination of a visit from Tianjin officials last June and a reciprocal visit in January in which the two sides talked about synergies among membership companies in areas such as health care, education, and legal and financial services. The deal will put Philadelphia on the map when the roughly 2,000 Tianjin WTA member companies that are looking for U.S. business opportunities.

PhilaPort Finalizes Purchase of Strategic Parcel of Land
PhilaPort announced today the acquisition of a 29-acre parcel of land, locally known as the former Philadelphia Produce and Seafood Terminal, located at Third Street and Pattison Avenue. With this purchase PhilaPort now owns 1,016 acres of land. This purchase from Philadelphia's public-private economic development corporation, PIDC, will allow PhilaPort to develop warehousing to support the growth in container operations at Packer Avenue Marine Terminal (PAMT).

The United States intends to commence negotiations with Canada and Mexico regarding modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The NAFTA was negotiated more than 25 years ago, and, while our economy and U.S. businesses have changed considerably over that period, NAFTA has not. The United States seeks to support higher-paying jobs in the United States and to grow the U.S. economy by improving U.S. opportunities under NAFTA. Our specific objectives for this negotiation will comply with the specific objectives set forth by Congress in section 102 of the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is seeking public comments on matters relevant to the modernization of NAFTA in order to inform development of U.S. negotiating positions.

The United States commenced bilateral trade negotiations with Canada more than 30 years ago, resulting in the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force on January 1, 1989. In 1991, bilateral talks began with Mexico, which Canada joined. The NAFTA followed, entering into force on January 1, 1994. Tariffs were eliminated progressively and all duties and quantitative restrictions, with the exception of those on a limited number of agricultural products traded with Canada, were eliminated by 2008. NAFTA also includes chapters covering rules of origin, customs procedures, agriculture and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, government procurement, investment, trade in services, protection of intellectual property rights, and dispute settlement procedures. On May 18, 2017, following consultations with relevant Congressional committees, the U.S. Trade Representative informed Congress that the President intends to commence negotiations with Canada and Mexico with respect to the NAFTA.
2. Public Comment and Hearing
To assist USTR as it develops its negotiating objectives and positions for the agreement, the Trade Policy Staff Committee (TPSC) invites interested persons to submit comments and/or oral testimony at a public hearing on matters relevant to the modernization of the NAFTA. In particular, the TPSC invites comments addressed to:
USTR must receive written comments no later than Monday, June 12, 2017.
A hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., in the Main Hearing Room at the U.S. International Trade Commission, 500 E St. SW., Washington, DC 20436. If necessary, the hearing will continue on the next business day. Persons wishing to testify orally at the hearing must provide written notification of their intention by Monday, June 12, 2017. Washington, D.C. -- In an interview this weekend published by Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper about U.S.-Saudi economic relations during President Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia, David Hamod, President & CEO of the National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce (NUSACC), discussed the Kingdom's historical relations with the United States, its changing economic priorities and strategy, and opportunities for U.S. businesses in Saudi Arabia.
Q: What is your assessment of Saudi - American economic relations, and what is the main purpose of the U.S. business visit to the Kingdom?
A: For decades, America's commercial relations with Saudi Arabia have served as the bedrock of trade and investment with the Arab world. This special relationship is based on mutual interests and shared goals, and longstanding commitments from both sides have ensured a strong, steady, and stable partnership during even the most challenging times in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
This week's visit will help to forge personal and professional bonds between President Trump and Saudi Arabia's leadership. I believe that these new friendships will stand the test of time -- and politics -- to take the Saudi - U.S. relationship to the next level.
Many of our Chamber's companies will be in Saudi Arabia this week in conjunction with President Trump's visit. The presence of these companies in Riyadh should send a strong message that, in my opinion, the commercial relationship is every bit as important as the security relationship. In fact, over the long-term, the commercial relationship may be even more important because commerce is key to creating new jobs that will grow the economy in the Kingdom for decades to come.
Q: What is the size of U.S. exports to Saudi Arabia?
A: U.S. goods exports to Saudi Arabia dipped a little last year, to US $18 billion. This dip was consistent with the downturn in the global economy, exacerbated by relatively low oil prices, which had a dampening effect on some U.S. businesses. But for the most part, bad news was overshadowed by good news:
In other words, despite the challenges in the Middle East last year, this region remained one of the most attractive and reliable markets for U.S. goods and services.

Q: What does the future hold for the Kingdom and the USA, according to Saudi Vision 2030?
A: Historically, the Saudi - U.S. commercial relationship has been constructed on four pillars: Oil & gas, defense & security, infrastructure, and consumerism. The people of Saudi Arabia have trusted American brands for decades because these products are known for quality, value, and reliability.
These four pillars will continue to be important, of course, but Saudi Vision 2030 will encourage some significant changes:
Saudi Vision 2030, in a word, is all about youth. Young men and women in Saudi Arabia represent the future of the Kingdom. As such, they need to cherish and protect their heritage while, at the same time, blaze new trails as entrepreneurs. They must also be invested in their communities through productive employment, which is why the Kingdom's new focus on small and medium-sized enterprises is so vitally important. In my humble opinion, no one in the world does entrepreneurship or community service as well as the Americans do, and we look forward to the opportunity to share our experience and expertise with our Saudi counterparts.
