MDCSYSTEMS® IS A WORLD TRADE CENTER OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA MEMBER

From MDCSystems®:
Picture
Mitchell Swann, P.E., a partner at MDCSystems® completed a series of speaking engagements in several cities in Pakistan, December 5-11, 2015.  Mitchell was invited as part of ASHRAE’s “Distinguished Lecturer” program to speak in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi, Pakistan in a series of lectures to both ASHRAE professional chapters in each city and to student chapters and Engineering classes at the University of Engineering & Technology, the Islamic International University and NED University of Engineering & Technology in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi respectively.

Mitchell provided two lectures to each of the professional chapters and a more interactive session at each of the universities. The professional programs were “Design Build – Executing the Project” (with a tilt towards ‘green buildings’) and “Connecting Green Building Outcomes to Enterprise Sustainability Programs.”  The university program was entitled “The Sustainability Imperative and Engineering Ethics,” which is a timely topic for Pakistan as it faces the challenge of balancing social and economic growth and energy production challenges.
This was Mitchell’s second visit to Karachi having been invited as a DL presenter before in 2013.  Mitchell has been on ASHRAE’s Distinguished Lecturer roster since 2006 and has presented in Pittsburgh, PA, Harrisburg, PA, Baltimore, MD, Birmingham, AL, and Chicago, IL, in 2015 as well as numerous locations, both nationally and internationally in previous years.

ACE Export Reports Authorization & Census Vetting Process

2/2/2016

From the U.S. Census Bureau:

As you submit your requests for Export Reports Access by EIN in ACE, the Census Bureau team would like to share helpful tips to make the vetting process more efficient as you obtain authorization to access your export data in ACE.

Helpful Highlights regarding obtaining ACE Export Reports Authorization:
  • Vetting by the Census Bureau Team is NOT required to file Electronic Export Information (EEI) via AESDirect in ACE.
  • Only request “EIN Reports Authorization” if you want to access export reports in ACE.
  • Newly established export accounts without prior filing history at the EIN level will not be authorized to access export reports in ACE.
  • EINs associated with an established ACE Importer Account do not require further vetting by the Census team, therefore do not select the feature “Requests EIN Reports Authorization” when adding the exporter role to an existing account.
  • Submit the Certificate of Authority (COA) for subsidiaries that plan on retrieving export reports. Prior filing history for each requested EIN is required.
  • If you have multiple EINs associated with an account, request access for each EIN and submit a comprehensive COA listing the subsidiaries requesting access.
  •  In addition, shipment information must be verified by the Census Team prior to obtaining approval for Reports Authorization.

The information provided in this broadcast will assist you in obtaining Export Reports Access. Please visit our website for additional information on obtaining Exports Reports authorization by the Census Bureau at www.census.gov/foreign-trade/compliance/aesvetting.

For additional assistance, please call our International Trade Helpline at 800-549-0595:

U.S. Korea Connect examines FTA impact on auto exports

2/2/2016

As reported by U.S. Korea Connect:
Products as diverse as automobiles, fresh lobsters, grapefruit, and coffee had previously seen tariffs as high as 30 percent, but on New Year's Day tariffs on these products were completely eliminated...
Following the 2012 implementation of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) tariffs on U.S. passenger vehicle exports to Korea were immediately reduced from 8 percent to 4 percent. By 2014, just two years after this significant tariff reduction, U.S. auto exports to Korea reached $1 billion, a 32.4 percent increase over 2013, and a 141 percent increase over 2011, the year preceding the implementation of the KORUS FTA. Moreover, between January and November 2015, U.S. auto exports reached a record high, with an increase of $109.7 billion over 2014. The dramatic growth of U.S. auto exports to Korea is expected to continue thanks to the January 1, 2016, removal of all tariffs on autos... view U.S. Korea Connect 2016 Newsletter Issue 1

Top Challenges Facing Manufacturers Over Next 3 Years

2/2/2016

As reported by NIST MEP:
Seven in ten clients cited cost reduction as a challenge in FY 2015, which has declined slightly. While continuous improvement is consistently cited as the top single challenge over the past seven years, there are some important shifts since FY 2009.
  • Growth, reported by slightly more than five in 10 clients as a challenge and product development/innovation, cited by nearly 47 percent (up from 45 percent), rank second and third respectively.
  • Nearly 45 percent reported employee recruitment and retention as an important obstacle, which compares to less than 20 percent of the clients previously.
  • Technology and supply chain needs are more important than they were previously. The share of clients citing technology needs as a challenge rose by 4 percentage points, from roughly 10 percent in 2009 to over 14 percent in 2015. Managing partners (or supply chains) rose by 1 percentage point.
Smaller shares of clients report that growth, sustainability, and financing are important challenges versus seven years ago. For instance, the share of clients identifying financing as a challenge fell from 18 percent in 2009 to roughly 10 percent in 2015. This probably reflects changes in credit becoming more available and the fact that many firms have cleaned up their balance sheets. The declining share of clients saying that growth is an important challenge (even though more than half the clients still cite it as important even now) may likely reflect the uptick in manufacturing activity. The share of clients reporting sustainability fell by 5 percentage points, while the share of clients reporting exporting only fell slightly.
