Over the last three months, the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia has hosted PA Authorized Trade Representatives (ATRs) from 19 different countries. Each event featured country briefings by the ATRs, focusing on specific emerging industries, followed by one-on-one meetings with qualified export ready companies.
Covering a wide range of industry sectors, the ATRs work with Pennsylvania companies to provide them with resources and assistance in determining best export opportunities in their respective international markets. The WTCGP will host all 23 PA ATRs again on September 16 and 17, 2009 as part of Pennsylvania International Week. The ATRs will be available for one-on-one meetings with qualified companies, subject to appointment availability.

On Thursday, June 4th, eight participants of the WTCGP’s American Business Practices for International Students (ABPIS) Program toured the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA). The event began with an overview by Tummona Fisher, community relations liaison, PRPA, of the port’s multi-location facilities and the daily functions and services that it provides. The students were also briefed on the regional economic impact of 65,000 jobs that are supported by the Philadelphia port and the port’s plans for expansion.
Following the presentation, Ms. Fisher took the students on a tour of the PRPA’s Tioga and Packer Avenue Terminals. The tour provided a first-hand look at the international shipping process, especially that of perishable goods and container shipments.
The ABPIS Program was developed by the WTCGP to work closely with a select group of foreign college students to introduce them to the nuances of U.S. business practices and to foster life-long relationships with area companies. The two-year long program, which began in July 2008, includes educational seminars, manufacturing/business tours and one-on-one meetings. There are still openings for new participants. For more information on this program, please contact Jessica Lepson at 215-586-4240 ext. 118 or jlepson@wtcphila.org.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development’s (DCED) Office of International Business Development reported record results from July 2008 to April 2009, assisting over 1,200 companies in doing $411 million worth of export business.
With the current troubled economy, many Pennsylvania companies are looking to grow their business in the international market. The World Institute for Strategic Economic Research (WISER) showed total PA exports of goods worth $34.4 billion in 2008 - an 18% increase from 2007. This exceeded that of the United States, as a whole, whose total exports increased by 12% from 2007.

On May 19, 2009, the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) hosted a TradeRoots initiative. TradeRoots Pennsylvania is a non-political, bi-partisan partnership led by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with key chambers and the business community from throughout the state. The event included a press conference that addressed the importance of international trade for the Greater Philadelphia area and the entire state of Pennsylvania. Featured speakers included: Leslie Schweitzer (U.S. Chamber of Commerce), Terry Baker (International Longshoreman's Union), Leo Holt Jr. (Holt Logistics), and Dominic O'Brien (PRPA).
