The World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia’s Export for Scholars program is a newly designed and implemented program to educate the next generation of world-class business people on the importance of international trade. Drexel University‘s LeBow College of Business MBA students recently participated in the first trade mission under this innovative and unique program.
The students joined the WTCGP and Pennsylvania and New Jersey client companies on a combined trade mission and study tour to Malaysia and Hong Kong from March 14th - 27th. Prior to the trip, students met with the companies and conducted targeted market research for each company participant. During the trade mission, the students sat in on the business meetings, seeing first hand the dynamics of conducting business in a different economic, political and social environment. The WTCGP also arranged company visits to Campbell Soup’s Cheong Chan plant in Selangor, Malaysia, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Wachovia Bank’s Trade Processing Center in Hong Kong.
A highlight of the trip was an excursion to Macau, where the students were treated to a luncheon reception at the World Trade Center Macau, and a briefing by Wendy Wong, of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on the gaming industry in Macau. The vibrancy of Macau’s economy is emblematic of the excitement of Asia and the participants were left with a lasting memory of the true spirit of international business.
The Export for Scholars program is an educational initiative to leverage the international expertise and connections of the WTCGP to broaden the exposure of area university students to the challenges and opportunities of the global marketplace.
