Bruce Pansius, WTCGP’s CFO, attended the North American WTCs regional meeting in Veracruz, Mexico in February. This meeting was attended by fifty representatives of WTCs in the U.S., Mexico and Canada and is held each year to share ideas for growth and development. This year, the World Trade Center of Veracruz hosted the meeting and showcased their beautiful city and the state of Veracruz.
The city of Veracruz is the oldest of colonial Mexico, and was the landing point for Hernán Cortés in 1519. Today the state of Veracruz is home to seven million people and is a center for the country’s manufacturing, agriculture and natural resource industrial sectors. The city’s port is the country’s third largest and is the principal port for the export of cars and other vehicles manufactured in the country’s interior.
The meeting’s three day agenda was packed with presentations on the regional economy, the nuances of doing business in Mexico, PROMEXICO’s support programs for exports and foreign direct investment, as well as trade education programs designed for implementation at WTCs around the world. The WTC delegates were honored to be visited by the Governor of the State of Veracruz, Fidel Herrera Beltrán, who presented Guy Tozzoli, WTCA president, with special recognition for his contributions to world peace though the promotion of international trade and the World Trade Center concept.
The second day of meetings focused on the issues and challenges faced by WTCs in the current economy with special emphasis on building membership, expanding services and securing economic sustainability. The true value of the WTCA’s regional meetings is in the relationships forged between people and the collective experience of running a WTC.
The meeting also allowed for tours of old Veracruz and its port facilities, an introduction to its wonderful cuisine and a remarkable visit to the ruins of el Tajín, an excavated pre-Columbian (Totonac) city dating to 600 AD.
