On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, the most destructive hurricane in the history of the western hemisphere, brought devastation to Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. The overall geopolitical effect of this natural disaster was tremendous. New Orleans as a city and as a port complex almost ceased to exist. Other ports in the affected areas stopped their regular operations. Thus, Katrina temporarily shut down the key exit from as well as the key entrance to North America.

Established in 1884, Ottens Flavors of Philadelphia, Pa. manufactures flavoring ingredients for the food and beverage industry. They started exporting in 1986 to Sweden and Japan. For the last three years, with the assistance and advice of the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia (WTCGP), Ottens has significantly increased their export sales to 30 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

On September 8, 2005 the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce co-hosted a special reception for Pennsylvania’s Speaker of the House, John M. Perzel. Representative Perzel led a delegation to China over the summer with the purpose of exploring possibilities for promoting bilateral exchange in the areas of trade and commerce between Fujian Province and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
