Surrounded by an impressive display of fine rugs in the Maloumian Oriental Rugs showroom and warehouse, the WTCGP CEOs China Operations Club’s participants enjoyed an overview of owner Roy Maloumian’s 30 years of buying products from China, India and the Middle East. The second speaker, Dan Kennedy, Vice President of Purchasing for R&B Inc., has worked in China for 30 years with three different companies, each having a different production and management model. Both executives stated that the relationships they developed over the years have been key to their ongoing success.
The speakers discussed their strategies and the evolution of their businesses from the ‘old’ pre-Tiananmen Square days to the more recent business environment where contact is via mobile phone, digital pictures and the internet. While technology has made contact much easier, the basic relationship issues of creating trust, ensuring reliability and developing a mutually profitable, long-term relationship is still a difficult and time-consuming endeavor. The speakers shared numerous negotiation elements needing consideration and some ways to minimize risk when dealing with vendors, agents and other Chinese partners.
Next WTCGP CEOs China Operations Club is to be held on January 26, 2006.*
