WTCGP Round Table: "Setting Expectations for Doing Business in Latin America

Approximately 28 southeastern PA companies attended WTCGP’s round-table forum “Setting Expectations for Doing Business in Latin America,” generously hosted by the law offices of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP in Philadelphia on April 28, 2006.

This event, part of the WTCGP LATD Program seminar series, included presentations and an in-depth question-and-answer session led by our panel of experts: Randy Edler, CEO, Edler Associates; Joanna Savvides, President, WTCGP and Brigg Lopez-M., Latin American Program Manager, WTCGP.

In his presentation, Randy Edler emphasized the importance of relationship building, as well as building trust and respect in every business transaction with Latin America businesses. Edler also noted that one key component to successful international business is to have a presence in the target country. “You have to visit, you have to build the relationship, you must have face-to-face dialogue” he said.

In addition to effective international business practices, seminar participants were also advised on the crucial importance of setting realistic expectations while doing business in Latin America. “Setting expectations in business as in our personal lives has to do with the concept of CERTAINTY,” said Lopez-M., who encouraged the participating companies to use strategic techniques when setting expectations in business transactions with their Latin America counterparts. “Setting expectations with international buyers is as simple as communicating - letting your business counterpart know what you're doing, informing your business clients and partners of the things you expect from the business relationship, and letting people know what happens next and when,” he added.

The round-table “was definitely a fresh perspective to doing business in Latin America” said one of the seminar participants at the conclusion of the seminar.
