Total seasonally adjusted U.S trade deficit for January-July 2006 reached $482.7 billion, as exports totaled $589.7 billion and imports equaled $1,072.4 billion. Canada remained the U.S. top trading partner accounting for 18.9% of the total trade, followed by Mexico (11.6%), China (11.1%), Japan (7.2%) and Germany (4.5%). The largest trade deficits were also recorded with: China - $121.4 billion, Japan - $50.7 billion, Canada - $44.8 billion, Mexico - $36.4 billion and Germany - $27.7 billion.
With regard to trade by individual states, Pennsylvania and New Jersey accounted for nearly 6.2% of total U.S. exports in July 2006, as exports from PA totaled just over $2.36 billion and exports from NJ equaled $2.6 billion. During the first seven months of 2006, New Jersey, with exports over $18.6 billion, ranked 9th among the top U.S. exporting states, followed by Pennsylvania whose exports equaled $16.5 billion.
