CEO China Operations Club members listen attentively to
Mr. Dombalis' presentation.
Mr. Dombalis is a former Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Pacific Trade Division for P&O Nedlloyd. Having spent seven years living and working in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, he provided his first-hand experience to members of the club.
The tremendous growth in Chinese container shipments coming into and out of America’s ports poses many infrastructure capacity, security, reliability and timeliness challenges. Mr. Dombalis emphasized that increasing China-originated container volume is straining the aging US port and transportation infrastructure. He urged companies in attendance to voice their concerns to the Department of Transportation in order to initiate a National Freight Policy (NFP). This policy would ultimately expedite trucking into and out of the ports, lower demurrage charges and thereby benefit all import and export shippers.
Mr. Dombalis refered to the in-out container imbalance and provided examples and strategies on how to change inbound, outbound and domestic routes to lower overall shipping costs. He also discussed the future impact of the Yangtze River Delta corridor opening, the shifts in China and global sourcing. In addition, he advised companies how to revise their supply chain by identifying optimal China water and land routes. Some Foreign Enterprise rules were also addressed.
