Beginning January 23, 2007, in order to enter or re-enter the United States all persons (including U.S. citizens), traveling by air from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to have a passport (unless traveling with a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document or Air NEXUS card). Lawful permanent residents (LPRs), refugees, and asylees will continue to be able to use their Alien Registration Card (Form I-551 - “Green Card”), or other valid evidence of permanent residence status (or refugee or asylee status).
Effective January 1, 2008, a similar requirement will be applied to travelers arriving to the United States by land or sea (including ferries). For more information, please refer to “Documents You Will Need to Enter the United States,” published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
