Exports Grow by More Than 15% in Pennsylvania and New Jersey
Chemicals, machinery, transportation equipment, primary metals and computers and electronic products were the top five product categories in Pennsylvania’s exports. Exports of these goods amounted to $5.2 billion - nearly 65% of the total state’s exports.
Top exports for New Jersey were chemicals, primary metals, transportation equipment, computers and electronic products and waste and scrap. In January-March 2008, near $5.6 billion of these goods were exported from New Jersey.
More than 50% of goods exports from Pennsylvania were shipped to the top five markets: Canada – $2.5 billion, Mexico - $533 million, Belgium- $462 million, the United Kingdom - $379 million, and China - $378 million. In New Jersey, the top five export destinations accounted for 46% of total exports. Canada received goods worth $1.7 billion; the United Kingdom - $721 million; Japan - $558 million; Italy - $474 million; and Germany - $409 million.
Of the top 50 markets for Pennsylvania, the fastest growing in the first quarter of 2008 on a year-to-year basis were: Peru – 349%, Guatemala – 306%, the United Arab Emirates – 113%, Singapore – 109%, Brazil – 99%, Norway – 49% and the Russian Federation – 47%. New Jersey recorded the highest growth rates with: Georgia – 183%, Venezuela – 116%, Lebanon – 104%, Nigeria – 94%, Chile – 92%, Turkey – 87% and the United Arab Emirates – 83%.
