Small- and medium-sized companies, those employing fewer than 500 people, accounted for 97% of all identified exporters and 29% of all the known exports in 2005, reported the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Commerce in a recently released report “A Profile of Exporting Companies, 2004-2005.” In the manufacturing sector, 96% of exporters were classified as SMEs, while for wholesalers this statistics was even higher – 99%.

The United States concluded an historic agreement with the Republic of Korea on April 1, 2007. The two countries agreed to eliminate tariffs and other barriers to trade in goods and services, promote economic growth and strengthen economic ties between the United States and Korea. The new agreement, KORUS FTA, will eliminate virtually all tariffs within 10 years, allow trade in remanufactured goods, provide increased market access for U.S. auto manufacturers, expand markets for U.S. farmers and ranchers, provide new protections for U.S. investors, etc.

This year’s World Trade Center Regional Meeting will be held in Cologne, Germany from June 20 – 24, 2007. In addition to attendees from WTCs in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, there will be representatives from Mexico, Canada, Russia, Asia and the United States. A focal point of the assembly will be matchmaking meetings with potential trading partners in European markets.
