Thomas E. Graf, Assistant Vice President,
Foreign Exchange Desk, Sovereign Bank
Mr. Graf started his presentation "Hedging Your Foreign Exchange Exposure" by analyzing economic and political events that propel exchange rates. He explained the differences between convertible and non-convertible currencies and focused on the obstacles that the latter can present to companies doing business overseas. Mr. Graf illustrated the possible effect of exchange rate fluctuations on margins. He showed charts tracking the weakening U.S. dollar exchange rates against such major Latin American currencies, as the Mexican peso, the Brazilian real, the Colombian peso, and the Chilean peso over the last three years. Mr. Graf described several scenarios whereby companies can protect themselves from adverse movements in the exchange rate.
The seminar’s attendees took advantage of the unique roundtable format of the WTCGP Trade Tactics Mentoring Breakfast program to discuss common issues and challenges of doing business internationally. Banking sector experts present at the event were asked questions about risks associated with international credit card payments, fees charged for international bank-to-bank wire transfers, as well as the costs and benefits of various international payment methods. Following the discussion, breakfast participants met one-on-one with their mentors for 30-minute mentoring sessions.
